There were 38 men and 27 women, and their ages ranged from 12 to 23 years. In the fall of 1877, the student body consisted of 15 students in the college proper and 50 students in the preparatory school. At the time, there were few high schools in the state that could adequately prepare students for university work, so in addition to the university, a preparatory school was formed on campus. The doors of the university opened on September 5, 1877. The cornerstone of the building that became Old Main was laid on September 20, 1875. (There are now six prisons in the Cañon City area.) Cañon City was at a disadvantage as it was already the home of the Colorado Territorial Prison. The consolation prize for the losing city was to be the home to the new Colorado State Prison. Two cities competed for the site of the University of Colorado: Boulder and Cañon City. In 2021, the university received over $634 million in sponsored research to fund programs like the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics and JILA. To date, 5 Nobel Prize laureates, 10 Pulitzer Prize winners, 11 MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipients, 1 Turing Award laureate, and 20 astronauts have been affiliated with CU Boulder as alumni, researchers, or faculty. The university consists of nine colleges and schools and offers over 150 academic programs, enrolling more than 35,000 students as of January 2022. In 2021, the university attracted support of over $634 million for research and spent $536 million on research and development according to the National Science Foundation, ranking it 50th in the nation.
